Medgar Evers was the first state field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi. He led demonstrations and efforts to increase voter registration and boycotts of companies with  discriminatory practices. Evers' efforts to promote racial justice resulted in his house being firebombed in May 1963. In June 1963, Medgar Evers was murdered.
