Daisy Bates, with her husband, founded and operated the Arkansas State Press during the 1940s and 1950s. Based in Little Rock, the newspaper became a voice for civil rights, supporting racial integration in schools. In 1952, Bates became president of The Arkansas Conference of Branches of the NAACP. Bates guided and advised the Little Rock Nine when, in 1957, they attempted to enroll at Little Rock Central High School.
