Between 1960 and 1966, John Lewis was arrested 40 times while protesting racist laws and practices. His first arrest was at a whites only Woolworth's lunch counter in Nashville where he and fellow protestors refused to leave their seats. On March 7, 1965, Lewis, with others, led 600 protestors on a march through Selma, Alabama. Hundreds of the marchers, including Lewis, were beaten by Alabama State Troopers.
